Before we begin...

The question itself holds a seemingly infinite potential to produce prohibitive caveats. Just what kind of show are we talking about? What’s the quality of the book we’re reading? Do either of these sources hold a bias, either blatant or subtle? There is no end to the factors.
Therefore, before I dive into the question itself I find that a ‘control’ is necessary, a standard by which we compare our notes. In order to find this control we must look to the common factor between television and reading, the brain. To that note, I offer this quote: “Day in, day out, in a hundred ways, we demonstrate that most stimuli, whether impingements or circumstances or signals, have value or meaning only as we give it them.” [1]
This quote provides an excellent basis for our control and an excellent mind-set for when we dissect our subjects.
